About

My name is Indrajeet Mandal, and I am a clinical year medical student at UCL. I started UCL Medic back when I was applying for medical school. Initially, it was a place where I shared my own experiences about my medical application. Analysing the numbers is something I did for my own personal interest, but after realising that it could help others out (and that nobody really cared about my work experience), I decided to dedicate this blog to providing my thoughts on medical school and the application process.

If anyone has any specific questions, feel free to get in contact! As you can imagine, it is tough to juggle writing with a clinical medicine placement, but if your question is something I think would be beneficial, I may write a post about it!

Whoever told you that getting loads of A*s at GCSEs don't matter when it comes to Medicine is probably right. That is, if they aren't applying to Oxford. Or Birmingham. Or Cardiff. How Imperial use the BMAT - a guide for Medicine (A100) applicants

Imperial are one of the original 'big 4' medical schools that has been using the BMAT for many years. They are the only medical school that have a absolute BMAT cutoff and publish this on their website. In this post, I have explained exactly how Imperial use your BMAT score to decide whether you get an interview. The advantage of knowing this information beforehand is that you can judge how confident you are for the BMAT and then decide whether you want to apply. However, it does mean that if the BMAT doesn't do as well as you would like, your other areas can't compensate as the cutoff is a strict one.

Personal Statement

The personal statement is probably the most important piece of writing you will have to write for years. I found this to be the hardest part of the application as I wouldn't normally write a page of writing outlining my achievements and talking about my work experience. Therefore, I would recommend spending as much time as possible on it. There is no harm in starting as early as May/June in the year you are planning to apply as it gives you more time to get it perfect. What structure should I follow?  Most personal statements for Medicine follow the same structure. They start with an introduction which is an opening statement outlining your reasons for applying. The main body of the personal statement will be about your work experience and possibly your academic achievements. This is usually followed be a short section on your extra-curricular activities and then a conclusion to sum up.
